Inclusion - Supporting Learning

How do we support learning for special Needs, E.A.L. and More Able children?
St Stephen’s Primary is a fully inclusive school.
We believe fully in inclusion and cater for all children in a variety of ways to help support them in their own learning and development.
Children on the code of practice receive their own personal targets (IEP’s) 3 times a year. These are reviewed by teaching staff, parents and children. Each child has their own targets with them in the classroom and review them with their friends and adults each day.
Some children have visual timetables and specific programmes of work which they focus on to develop their key skills in the key areas they need to develop. The visual timetables help to develop communication, understanding, organisation and independence.
To support learning, this year we are running:
- Wave 3 Literacy – a literacy programme which builds up children’s early literacy skills in reading, writing, sound recognition and spelling. It is taught on a daily basis for half an hour outside of the classroom.
- FLS – this programme runs in year 5 and focuses on developing comprehension and writing skills. There is often additional homework with this programme, so please help support your children when they bring it home. FLS runs 5 days a week for half an hour, it takes place outside of the Literacy hour and classroom.
- Reading support – Children with difficulties in reading will receive a reading pack for them to work on over the period of a week. The guidance for parents is in the pack.
- More Able support – all lessons are differentiated and children are extended within each lesson. Yet, also there is a range of outside agencies who this year are coming in to support our children. Please see Fozia our More Able co-ordinator for more details.
Other support is given in classes through differentiation to each lesson and from support by Education Assistants and 2 Learning Mentors who work with specific children to break down their barriers to education.
